The Invitation

By Dawna, 17 June, 2010, No Comment

Devin, Ian and Ciara

I came across this on the proverbial web and decided it was well worth sharing. I hope that everyday I wake up with this committment to being a better person and pass this commitment on to my three cherubs.

The Invitation

by Oriah Mountain Dreamer

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain! I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it, or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest to me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul; If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see beauty even when it’s not pretty, every day, and if you can source your own life from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, “Yes!”

It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up, after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done to feed the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you, from the inside, when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

The Magical Compass for Employment

By Dawna, 9 June, 2010, No Comment

It is becoming that time of year when high school kids graduate and college seniors interview for those coveted few open positions. But this year – and I believe for the new generation of workers – the rules of employment from the baby boomers no longer apply. In the past year, I have coached myself and both my sons on the new outlook for employment and come to the realization that life is not like our parents told us it would be. As we all know, the days of 20-year employment at one company are gone. But I believe this is a good thing.

Jack Sparrow's Magic Compass If you open your eyes and ask yourself what you really truly love to do with your life, you will find the digital age gives you a new kind of freedom and flexibility that few generations have experienced. Therefore instead of a briefcase and suit, you may want to find Jack Sparrow’s magical compass. As you may know, in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean, Sparrow has a magical compass that points in the direction of what the holder wants most. This could be material possessions, physical locations or in some cases to a person.

As I was talking to Ian the other night about his career goals, the thought of this magical compass came to mind and I wondered if there was some way he could magically get a glimpse of his true employment desires. There are lots of books, online courses and of course scams to take your money. But there are also viable options for all of us to walk away from the drudgery and move towards a better way of living.

I now imagine myself holding Jack Sparrow’s mystical compass in my hand and extending it to the universe to point me in the direction of my greatest desires. Right now those desires are to make a comfortable living working from home by helping businesses improve their websites and becoming a professional blogger.

For the past 6 months I have studied various online moneymaking techniques and affiliate marketing options. There are lots of scams out there, but I believe I have found some things that will work. Follow me on this journey as I share the lessons I learned on my way to an independent life and hopefully a profitable one! Love you all and thanks for the support.

Swag Friday: Mama Mia

By Dawna, 7 May, 2010, No Comment

In honor of the upcoming Mother’s Day on Sunday, I decided to use the Mama Mia shirt for today’s Swag Friday. The Broadway touring show came through in September 2007. The good news is the show will be making a return visit to Houston sometime in the near future.

Enjoy and have a great Mother’s Day.

I’m a Nerd

Dr. Suess' Nerd from "If I ran the Zoo"

Dr. Suess coined the phrase Nerd in his 1950's book "If I ran the Zoo." Sadly, I think this looks like me!

There I said it! I’m a Nerd. Is anyone really surprised? For the past 4 months I have done little but immerse myself in all that is online and techie. Everything from coding a WordPress page with lots of seemingly random characters to writing tweets to complete strangers in hopes they will talk to me. I am becoming one of those creepy people that stares into a computer screen all day and then can’t talk to people in social situations.

Yesterday I think I may have finally arrived at Nerd Nirvana. I tweeted a comment about a very popular Facebook marketing guru, Mari Smith, and before I knew it she picked it up on her popular Twitter. OMG… I was happy and panicked. She then direct messaged me and wanted to add my comment to her Facebook fan page. I was giddy!

Mari Smith was talking to me and I would suddenly start getting traffic to my little corner of the web world. My first impulse besides delirium was to head over to my Morpheus Marketing website and start sprucing up my code and adding gadgets. Almost like having the in-laws come to visit.

I soon had to calm down because it was Mommy Duty time. Ciara and I headed to dance class and I all but forgot about the big Tweet. That is until my phone kept notifying me of people that were following me on Twitter. OMG… now I have to say something daily, perhaps hourly, that is important, or interesting, or witty, or insightful, or ….

Pressure! Fun!
